Current Cricket Victoria rookie, Ash Chandrasinghe has burst onto the scene in the past 18 months, making his name known at both premier and state cricket levels.

He made headlines smashing 119-not-out in his Victorian Sheffield Shield debut at the end of 2022, before becoming a mainstay in the Victorian First XI for the remainder of the season.

However, this season Chandrasinghe has been tearing it up for Casey-South Melbourne in the Victorian Premier Cricket Firsts and is a big reason as to why the Swans side sits on top of the ladder after Round 10. He has been playing in Victoria’s Second XI this season and will be pushing to squeeze back into a star-studded Victorian side come the back end of this season.

Having recently turned 22 years old, the young gun is one of the most promising talents and will be looking to have a big 2024 season.

Chandrasinghe came into the 2023-24 premier cricket season having scored 1308 runs for Casey-South Melbourne across the previous two seasons which earnt him a Victoria rookie contract. Last season, he hit 639 runs at an average of 39.94 and while he hit a few 70s and 80s, he was unable to break it open and turn those into big centuries, but he has this season.

After Round 10, the 22-year-old has blasted 366 runs at an average of 61 having played just six matches for the Swans – this includes two centuries. He hit 113 off 240 balls against Kingston-Hawthorn in Round 4 and achieved the feat again the following game against Essendon with 111 off 255 balls. For someone of his youthful age, it is rare to come across a more disciplined and mentally strong batsman who is prepared to bat for hours and hours in order to play his natural game.

Chandrasinghe still has aspirations to get back into the Victorian Sheffield Shield side and dreams of one day representing his country.

“Winning a Shield title for Victoria, that would definitely be something that I’d want to achieve,” he said.

“Probably after that, anyone would be wanting to play for Australia one day and earn their baggy green … that would be the end goal.” - Ash Chandrasinghe

Chandrasinghe has opened the batting almost every game this season and is a key reason as to why the Swans sit above 17 other teams to be on top of the ladder. He sits fifth in the competition for runs scored and will look to be damaging with the bat in hand when his season resumes on January 6 against Ringwood.
