Sunday afternoon marked an historic day in NBL history, with United star Chris Goulding stepping on court for the 450th time.
With the Adelaide 36ers coming off three straight victories, the game was tight from the outset. An offensively dominant first half from both sides saw scores of over 50 points at half time, with United ahead of the ledger by only a few points.
After half time United lifted again for their inspirational leader, with a 21-8 third quarter blowing the game wide open. Goulding and his men cruised on to claim a 106-79 victory in what was a brilliant response to their loss against Cairns.
In the process Goulding moved into 25th spot on the all-time NBL scoring leaderboard, putting up 13 points with some trademark threes and mesmerising passes.
In the early parts of this season, the 35-year-old has showed no signs of slowing down, performing well as a starter or coming off the bench. Current and long time coach of Goulding, Dean Vickerman paid tribute to the Australian basketball legend after the game.
“We got to celebrate his 450th in a special way and he’s turning into a great leader of this club,” he said. “For him to get to cheer on some of the young guys, he enjoys that experience just as much as he does making threes.”
"He's going to be one of the most elite shooters and big moment players to ever play in this league" - Vickerman
“When his career is done, he’s going to be one of the most elite shooters and big moment players to ever play in this league, and in the future we want him to be recognised as one of the great leaders.”
He has formed a dynamic shooting duo with former NBA player Ian Clark, with the fellow veteran speaking very highly of Goulding’s talent and shooting ability.
“He’s probably in the top two or three best shooters I’ve ever been around, and it doesn’t come by accident,” Clark said.
“Seeing the work that he puts in and how hard he is on himself because he expects more from himself, it’s so contagious.”
Melbourne United are looking like a force in NBL25 with Goulding set to be vital to their charge once again. Vickerman put his star’s success down to his longevity and dedication to his craft. He also said that an amazing work ethic was a factor in Goulding becoming one of Australia’s most decorated players across the past two decades.
“He’s one of the most elite shooters because he does the work and all the young guys see that every day, how much work he puts in and the standard that he sets himself, Vickerman said.
"Not many people can get there."
Goulding and his United side will take on a struggling South East Melbourne Phoenix side for their next game on Sunday October 20th, as they search for their fifth win of the season.
