The incredible football journey of Isaac Smith has come to an end, with Smith informing his teammates that he will retire at the end of the 2023 season.
In a club statement, Smith was full of gratitude reflecting on his football journey.
“I am so fortunate to have been given the opportunity to play AFL football,” he said.
“It's every kid's dream growing up and to have that play out for me across the last 13 seasons at two great clubs is something really special.”
Smith also highlighted how grateful he had been for the support shown all of those people close to him during his time at Geelong and Hawthorn.
“From the time I walked into Hawthorn, and now being at Geelong, I have always felt right at home at both organisations and to this day have made some very special friendships and bonds with a lot of people,” Smith said.
“I would like to thank everyone along the journey, in particular my wife Candice and children Isla and Emmett. I will forever be indebted to you for the support you have shown me.”
The 34-year-old veteran wingman has played 277 senior matches and kicked 204 goals over his 13-season career for Hawthorn and Geelong, still with several more games to be played over the remainder of the season.
It all started back in 2010, when he joined the Hawks after being selected with pick 19 in the National Draft.
Smith made his senior debut the following year, which turned into 210 matches played with the Hawks before leaving the club at the end of the 2020 season.
In a dominant Hawks side, Smith would play in three consecutive winning premierships from 2013 and 2015.
Smith debuted for the Cats in 2021, where he proved to still be a reliable, experienced and consistent player.
He became the oldest player to win the Norm Smith Medal when the Cats thumped the Sydney Swans by 81 points in the 2022 grand final. He collected 32 disposals and slotted three goals while producing 14 score involvements, 11 inside-50s, five clearances, 12 marks and a game-high 771 metres gained.
Geelong Football Club's general manager, Simon Lloyd, said Smith had played a vital and influential role with the Cats during his time at the club.
"Over his three seasons at the Cats, we have been blessed to have Isaac wear the Geelong hoops," he said.
"He is a unique individual and his ability to bring energy around the club is something that is going to be missed." - Simon Lloyd
Smith will still be hoping he can contribute on the field over the next few weeks as the Cats aim on making the top eight and playing finals in season 2023.
